rendering HTML _and_ Controls in ItemTemplates

I had a FormView in which I had a table in the EditItemTemplate. With the default rendering it was fine. When I added the CSSFriendly adapters the rendering ignored the table's html and only rendered the actual controls within the template. The quick fix is to add runat="server" to the table to make it into a control itself BUT what I really want to know is how to make the adapters not just loop through rendering controls, but to render any HTML that might be there too.

I posted a better explanation of what I mean here http://forums.asp.net/t/1167317.aspx but with no suitable replies, it occurs to me that this might be a better place to put it (even though discussions here rarely seem to get answered!) as this seems to be the place where people who actually work with adapters seem to hang out.

No-one else seems to have this problem so it could be possible I am doing something wrong - if it does happen to you as well, please let me know!
